SSL is short for Secure Sockets Layer. When a browser communicates with SSL technology, the SSL protocol encrypts the communication. Now, any private information can be transferred between a user and the website owner without the threat of forgery or tampering.
Transport Level Security (TLS) is the modern version of SSL. These two terms can also be used interchangeably. There are a few basic things that one should understand about SSL certificates.
1. Why is it important?
When using a basic https:// setting, the data exchanged between the user and the site can be intercepted by unauthorized parties. This creates a security risk and may even lead to identity theft. If you’re an ecommerce site or any other business that relies on private information sharing, then you need to get a SSL/TSL certificate.
A third party must vouch for the site if they want to get an SSL certificate. This third party is a certificate authority, or CA, for short. When a site gets a certificate from a trusted CA, it can show a Secure Site Seal from that authority.
A user can find the information regarding this certification for a particular website by clicking on the seal.
3. Validated certificates are more trusted
An Organizer Validated (OV) certificate is more authentic for a company. It is only offered by the CA when it has verified the company itself. For this purpose, paperwork is submitted to CA. It also confirms that the company has a right to own a domain.
Extended validation (EV) certificates require much more information about the company and are the most trusted type of SSL certificate.
4. Sub-domain support is available
If you have a domain with multiple sub-domains, do you have to get an independent certificate for each one of them? No!
While requesting certificate, you have to specify the domain which the certificate will protect. If you want one for all the sub-domains, you will get a ‘wildcard certificate’.
5. Multi-domain certificates has advantages
If you want a certificate for multiple domains, you should get one which covers them all. The multi-domain certificate helps a company during the authentication process. You only have to get it done once, instead of for every other domain.
Furthermore, a multi-domain certificate can protect as many as 210 domains.
